The Constellation is one of my most sewn Love Notions patterns! I wear it year round, and simply change up the fabrics that I sew it up in. My newest version is this navy blue “speckled” sweatshirt fleece I grabbed from Style Maker Fabrics last year. It’s so soft and warm and perfect for winter! I chose to use a gold metal zipper for this version. It’s one of my favorite zippers to use as it isn’t as heavy as some that you find (Coats & Clark version).
Where To Find Affordable Quality Zippers?
My go-to resource for zippers is SIL in the NYC Garment District. They have a great selection of zippers in hundreds of colors. They will also cut a zipper to any size that you may need. The GOOD NEWS? You can buy them online!
The zipper I used for my new navy sweatshirt fleece Constellation is the new EVERBRIGHT zipper. It is part of YKK’s new luxury line of zippers. It is highly polished and glides so smoothly. It comes in shiny brass or shiny silver. I prefer the #3 size but it is also available in #5. Both sizes are available in separating or closed end. Oh, and did I mention they are available in 107 colors? The zipper for my new Constellation was just $6,50. I feel this can zipper really elevate your Constellation to the next level. The color chart is very accurate, as when I don’t have time to run into the city to shop in person, I have ordered online. Shipping is fast too! There is even an option to change the zipper pull for an additional charge.
If you prefer plastic zippers, my favorite zipper would be the YKK, #3 Vislon zipper.You can find these zippers HERE. These zippers come in lengths of 4″- 28″ for just $3.50 in 146 different colors. You can also have them custom cut a zipper for you. These zippers are also available in #5 and #8 sizes and in closed, separating, and 2-way separating(limited colors). I highly recommend these zippers for any of your Love Notions patterns. I buy all my zippers from them for my Oakley Vests, Clef Coats as well as my Constellations. I am much happier with them than any I used to pick up at Joann Fabrics(RIP).

The Men’s North Star Pullover
My husband LOVES his North Star Pullover. He wears it constantly, and I’m always having to tell him to change when he goes into the garage to work on some “project”. I really need to make him another one. I have a few pieces of fabric I’ve picked up with him in mind. Perhaps this winter I’ll actually sew him another!
What I Wore Last/This Week~
I was away all week on vacation up in Newport, RI and Boston. The “feels like” temps were below zero up to the teens. Since we spent so much of our time there outdoors and bundled up I didn’t get photos of my outfits most days. I did however wear an LN Oakley Vest almost everyday! The first picture was taken in my driveway before we left on Sunday morning. Yup~ we drove through snow to get to Newport, RI. It took much longer than usual~ but we made it to the Sparkling Lights at The Breakers Mansion on time! In the bonus photos at the end of my post, you’ll see how I was dressed most of the time (LOL).

What I’m Sewing (Not Sewing) This Week ~
Perhaps I should say, ” What I wish I was sewing this week”. I’ve been away all week, just arriving home last night. So I quickly typed up the Weekly Stitch~ but then I need to decorate my Christmas tree (because you don’t want to leave a decorated tree with 2 cats alone in the house~ ask me how I know). Then I need to move on to cookie baking, because my grown daughters will be down next week and would be soooo disappointed if their favorite cookies aren’t waiting for them!
If I get a few minutes here and there these are my plans~
Sew up the Constellation I cut out last week. (See photo above)
Sew up a colorblocked sweatshirt for Raspberry Creek Fabrics~ new Valentine’s Club Fabric that has just released. If I can’t get it sewn up I at least hope to get it cut out. See photo below.
My Fall Sewing Plans~
I’m really happy with how I’ve been able to stick to my sewing plans list~ and with how much I have actually completed! I have my 2 Clef Coats to sew, which I will begin right after the holidays! The only other think left is my Coda Coat, but this was actually always planned on having this done for late winter/early spring! In January I will be compiling a new sewing plan list for the Winter/Early Spring.

Bonus Photos~ Newport, Rhode Island and Boston!
Here are some photos from our trip this week. We drove up (through a snowstorm) to Newport to see the Sparkling Lights at The Breakers Mansion. All the Newport Mansions look stunning during the holidays~ but this was the one I wanted to see this year! We then drove up to Boston for a few days. We stayed on the edge of the North End (the historic Italian section) and across the street from the Boston Gardent(TD Garden)~ where we went to see my husband’s beloved Boston Bruins play. It was a great trip and he was so happy being back on his home turf. He has lost his accent (he actually worked on losing it during his college/law school days)~ but it actually makes him happy to hear it!!! We spend some time at Snowport down at the Seaport in Boston. It was cold~ but so there were so many great booths with handmade items and great food! I almost bought this yellow “Buttah” sweatshirt~ but yellow really isn’t my color! (Although she does have an Etsy shop with a white or blue version which I just may buy myself!) The navy sweatshirt with the gingham “Boston” is one I hope to recreate!! We even got in a bit of curling!

The Palmer Dress is such a classic and clean dress that’s perfect anytime of the year but it makes an awesome holiday dress! Depending on the options you choose and your fabric~ this dress can take you through all 4 seasons! Fabric choice can make the Palmer either dressy or casual~ the choice is yours! It’s a great versatile pattern that we should all have in our library! Personally, I can’t wait to make a version for spring! I simply adore the structured V-notch neckline (which is much easier to sew than you may think!). Simply put~ the Palmer Dress is a must have!

Sizing & Fit
The Palmer Dress is available in sizes XS-5X. Choose your size based on your high bust measurement. If between sizes, choose the smaller size. Use the full bust piece if your full bust minus your high bust is 4″ or greater. Remember that using the full bust piece will add 2″ the the waist of the bodice.
All Love Notions patterns are designed for the average 5’5″ woman. The back length of the dress is 38″ or the knee length version and 48″ for the midi length version.
My Palmer Dress~ Sizing & Modifications
For my Palmer Dress I sewed up and XL with the FBA and graded to a 2X for the waist and hips. This is exactly where my body measurements fall on the chart. It truly is important to go by your high bust measurement, as this insured that I got a nice fit at the neckline and shoulders. I sewed up the flutter sleeve with the narrow waistband and midi skirt.
You may notice that my version seems just a tad short in the front bodice. This was my final test version and I suggested to Tami (the owner and designer of Love Notions) that the Full Bust version needed a tad bit more length in the front. I suggested this based on my version and versions of other testers that had sewn the full bust option. (They agreed with me). This is was is so great about Love Notions and the way that pattern tests are run. As testers, we help make decisions for changes to the fit of a pattern as well as construction techniques.
Another note about the fit of my Palmer Dress. I did cut my elastic a tad longer than the chart indicated. This was just a personal preference as I didn’t want the elastic to be as tight as it is designed. I suggest you check this before sewing your waistband.
I am only 5 feet tall and I did not shortened the midi skirt at all. I do prefer my midi skirts a tad longer, so when I made this I will add an additional inch. (Note: I am not short-waisted so I never need to shorten patterns above the waist.)
Fabrics & Notions
The Palmer Dress was designed for medium weight fabrics with at least 20% horizontal stretch. Fabrics such as:
Ponte (not too heavy)
Stretch Velvet
Interlock
Double Knits
Lighter weight knits such as Double Brushed Poly and ITY would work nicely as well, but they may give you a slightly different finished result as they tend to be thinner and would have more drape. I highly recommend doubling the interfacing on the placket for stability when using these fabrics.

3/8″ elastic, 3 yards for sizes XS-L, 4 yards for sizes XL-4X, and 4 1/4 yard for 5X.
MY FABRIC
For my Palmer Dress, I dove deep into my stash. I had this wool double knit that I was gifted to me back in the 1980″s!!! Back in my 20’s I was the Fabric Library Coordinator at SPC (IYKYK). Often fabric manufacturers would gift me fabric so that I could feel it (and sew it up) so that I could then recommend it to the pattern designers. This was one piece that I held onto not knowing exactly what I wanted to make with it. The company is Everex Textiles, who today only sell to RTW manufacturers.
Sew Mary Mac’s Tips For Sewing The Palmer Dress
Page 9, Step 1~ Double the placket interfacing if you are using a lighter weight knit interfacing.
Page 9, Step 2~If sewing the full bust version, you may need to stretch the back bodice to fit the front bodice. Stretch the back bodice front the bust point marking up to the armscye
Page 10, Step 5~ After pressing the seam allowances outward, I did a row of top stitching so the sam allowances laid nice and flat. This may not be necessary on some fabrics, but on my double knit it was.
Page 10, Step 6~. Sewing the channels evenly and straight is very important for when inserting the elastic. When sewing channels like this I like to put tape on my throat plate to help be guide the fabric.
Page 10, Step 7~ Check the fit of your elastic before proceeding!!
Page 10, Step 8~ Mark the center front of your waistband to help you align it up with the center front seam of the bodice. Also mark your 1/4 points as well. Two things to note about this step:
You must stitch close to the last row of elastic channelstitching
If using the FBA front you will need to stretch the waist band to fit the bodice since the bodice will be slightly wider.
Page 11, Step 9~ USE Tricot knit interfacing for the collar pieces!
Page 13, Step 16~If using a thicker fabric grade the top edge of the seam allowance
Page 13, Step 17~I highly recommend hand stitching here for a neater more professional looking finish.

Layer Your Love Notions Patterns!!!!
One of my favorite things to do with all my Love Notions Me-mades is to layer them! All Fall and Winter long you can find me layered up in multiple LN garments! The best thing about wearing layers is when I get indoors, I can always take one (or two) off!
Base Layer
As a born and raised New Englander, my husband has lectured me for years on the importance of base layers! These are the patterns I use. Over the years I have learned to layer more especially in the colder weather!
My most used pattern is by far the Rockford Raglan. I use View A and size down one size if I am making it with the intention of being my base layer. If I am making it as a sweater/top to wear on its own I make my typical size(the one I measure at). What I like the most about the Rockford for this purpose is the raglan sleeve~ it creates less bulk in the shoulder and underarm area. I have always used a 1X1 rib knit for this purpose. The Sloane sized down also works really well for this purpose. In the photos below you can see how I have a Rockford on underneath!

Main Layer
These are the garments I make to wear alone or with a base underneath or a vest on top of. My favorite patterns that I create multiple combos with are:

Constellation Pullover
The Aria is one of my most sewn and worn LN garments. I wear them all year long, I just change up the fabrics I use for each season. This year, my favorite Aria is one of my newest ones made in a sweatshirt fleece from Raspberry Creek Fabrics. For colder temps corduroy is perfect too! I always wear a base layer under my Aria, and then often wear an Oakley Vest on top of that for warmth.
The Sloane makes a perfect main piece. I actually have Sloanes made in three different sizes that I wear. Sometimes I size down for base layer or I go up for a nice over-sized sweatshirt to wear over other layers. And then, they are my actual size Sloanes~ which I always love!
Each of the tops below work great with an Oakley over it!

The Terra Tunic with the V-neck hood is my favorite version. It’s roomy enough for a base layer underneath, yet not too big that I can’t put a vest on over it!
The Constellation is another pattern that I make in different sizes. I usually make my measured size which can still fit a base layer underneath if needed. However, I have sized up one for a more cuddly pullover as well. Either way, an Oakley vest still fits over it nicely.

The Constellation is truly a year round pattern for me! I just change the fabrics that I sew it up with. For the colder Winter weather, I’m sewing up 2 sweatshirt fleece versions (look for them later this month as they are next on my sewing list)
The Oakley Vest is one of my go-to’s. I love wearing them over my Arias, Sloanes and Constellations. When my husband and I are out bike riding, it’s nice to start with a base layer, add an Aria or Constellation and then top if off with an Oakley Vest or Clef Coat. It makes it so easy to take off or add one of the layers. Some of my typical casual day combos are the following:
Rockford + Aria + Oakley Vest
Rockford +Constellation + Oakley Vest
Rockford + Constellation + Oakley Vest + Clef Coat~ for when it gets even colder!
The newer Evanston Vest with the cowl neck is a great vest for when you’re wearing a heavy coat and don’t have a ton of extra arm room. The cowl keeps you warm, yet gives your arms more freedom. I love wearing this when I go into the city. (Tomorrow to be exact to see the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular!)
The Boyfriend Cardigan and Fraser Cardigans are perfect for more classic outfits when combined with the Sloane or Rockford Raglan.
The Clef Coat is really a jack-of-all trades! It can be made as a coat, but I also make and wear them as part of an outfit. I like to think of them as elevated zip-up sweatshirts. I made one last year as a promo for Raspberry Creek Fabrics in a Christmas print French Terry. I wore it all the time inside!
Made from fleece, it’s a great casual jacket to throw on top of your other LN patterns! Last year, for our last bike ride of the season, it was COLD and we were by the ocean. I had on a Rockford Raglan, Aria Button-down, Oakley Vest AND a fleece Clef Coat!
I have a gray sweatshirt fleece Clef Coat on my sewing plan list and it will come up right after my 2 new Constellations! I also have a Boucle Clef Coat planned for a classic piece I can wear inside when out to dinner and the restaurant is just too cold yet I don’t want to wear my actual coat!
Combine yours anyway you’d like! There are endless combinations to be had! I hope I’ve given you a tiny bit of inspiration to layer your Love Notions!

Which Patterns Should You Grab?
Need help deciding which patterns to grab during this sale? First, I recommend buying the recent new releases that you didn’t buy during the release sale. Patterns typically don’t become a $6 pattern until one year after they have released. Patterns such as the the Meadowlark Pants, Bridget Trousers, Bluegrass Shirt, Geneva Pullover and Evanston Vest are good ones to buy. These patterns may have released during the Spring and Summer months, however they will work perfectly for Fall and Winter too!
This is also a great time to pick up any of the recent $6 Feature Friday patterns that you may have missed. Patterns are only featured for $6 once a year, so if you missed one~ now is the time to grab it!

What I Wore This Week~
As I’ve been doing the past few weeks, I dug into the back of my closet to pull out things I haven’t been wearing. A few of those items I wore for the day and then decided to donate. A few others, I remembered why I use to love them. Others, I’ve decided on some minor adjustments I can make to them to make me love them again. And of course, some were actually a bit too small, but I wore them anyway (Hey June Halifax Hoodies).

What I Sewed This Week (and last week)~
Well, I haven’t gotten much sewing done these past 2 weeks. I’m still working on the new pattern test for Love Notions which releases 12/5. I just finished sewing up my final version and I can’t wait to show you all!
I was also busy prepping for my family coming for the holiday and hopping into the city to see Moulin Rouge with my sister. While in the city I grabbed a bunch of zippers from my favorite source, SIL, for the LN Oakley vests I’m sewing up.
My Fall Sewing Plans
Sometimes we need to pivot. That’s what I’ve decided I needed to do with one of the items on my Fall Plan. I knew I needed/wanted a few new LN Oakley Vests for my Fall and Winter wardrobe. I sewed up the Sage Quilted Knit that I had purchased a few years ago for the Oakley. Although I love the fabric itself, it just doesn’t work as nicely for the Oakley as my other quilted sweater knits did. This particular one has a bit more stretch to it and the recovery was not as good. I know as I wear it, it will become baggier and not be the look I’m going for. So~ I have 2 pieces of quilted sweater knit in my stash~ a gray and a purple~ which I will use instead. I have used this sweater knit in burgundy already for the Oakley and I love it. (See photos below)
Now I need to get binding and a zipper to match so I can sew them up! Update: I got the zippers on my trip into the city last week at my favorite spot SIL, ~ now I just need a purple binding! Whenever I go into the city, I cut tiny swatches of the fabrics I need zipper (or buttons) for to make matching them up easy. SIL also has an online store you can order from. The color chart on their website is pretty accurate~ I’ve ordered zippers I needed quickly and they matched perfectly!

The $6 Feature Friday pattern today, 11/14/25 is the Sloane Sweater! This is a MUST HAVE pattern in my opinion. Not only does it include great options~ it’s also a fun pattern to hack. PS~ the Kids Version is also on sale for $6 too! Be sure to use my code 10MACSEWS for an additional 10% off.
A few years ago some of my fellow sewists began calling me the “Sloane Queen” because I made so many! I found the last few years I had taken a step back from it (maybe because I needed to make a bigger size.) The last few weeks I’ve been pulling them out and wearing them anyway and I totally remember why I loved this pattern so much! I’ve altered my pattern and sewn up a few new ones too. Another thing I love about the Sloane is that you can size up or down depending on the look you want. I’ve been wearing my larges, and then just fit closer and are great for layering. I’ve also made then as size up as a relaxed sweatshirt! I’ve linked a few blog posts below so you can see all my Sloane versions and Sloane Hacks! Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom for some online Fabric Resources for the Sloane Sweater!!
The Sloane is a drop shoulder pullover that includes two basic body styles. View A has a slimmer silhouette with a curved high/low shirt tail hem that falls about mid hip. View B has a boxier more relaxed fit. It features a waistband and hits a high hip. I have even sized up for View B sometimes to have a more oversized sweatshirt.
Both views can be sewn with or without the yoke. It can be made as a basic crewneck or with a hood. Other options include a kangaroo pocket and elbow patches. There are so many different combinations you can come up with! The possibilities are endless!! Just go to the Love Notions Facebook Pattern Support group and type Sloane in the search. It’s hard to believe all the versions you’ll see are all made from this awesome pattern!

What I Wore Last Week~
Clearly I love wearing the LN Aria all Fall as I wore it several times this week again! I also searched through the back of my closet for things I don’t wear very often. The day I pulled out my LN Evanston Vest to wear and photograph~ I decided when looking at the photos that I felt it was too long. When I first made this I had added to the lengthen ~ so now I added it to my mending pile to shorten.

What I’m Sewing This Week~
This week I’ve been working on a new pattern test for Love Notions. (No sneak peeks yet~ Sorry!). That’s really about it! I’ve cleaned up my sewing space again and have pulled everything for my next few projects together. I’m moving on to my LN Oakley Vests as I have been wearing the ones I have nonstop with the drop in temperature!

I’m proud of myself for sticking to my Fall sewing plan list! I’m still trying hard not to add anything. Clearly I won’t finish this list before Fall is officially over~ but I will continue to work on this into the winter. Come late January/February I like to begin spring sewing anyway.

Surge has a such a great selection of sweater knits(at reasonable prices) that are perfect for the Sloane Sweater. I like sweater knits for both View A and View B. Some of my favorites are the Cayambe Rib knit and the Nepal Rib Knit. The Seville Wide Rib Knit would make a great dressier version. These are just a few of the sweater knits available. For View B of the Sloane I also like to use French Terry (check the stretch %!). Surge has an amazing selection of solid color French Terry perfect for color blocking. See all the colors HERE.
RCF has a nice selection of Hacci Sweater knits that are perfect for the Sloane. It sews up nicely in both View A and B. In addition to the “Club” selection found HERE you can also custom print any of the designs in the Designer Library on Hacci sweater knit. There is a big selection of plaids and stripes that would work so nicely for a Men’s Tailgate too.

RCF also has a nice selection of seasonal French Terry that is perfect for a View B Sloane. Over the years I have sewn more than a dozen for RCF (promo work) in various French Terry Prints. (Check out my Sloane Blog above to see some of them). You can see all the current “Club”/Retails French Terry Prints HERE. Below are a few of the Fall/Winter and Christmas prints available now.
French Terry Details: about $14.00 per yard, 58”wide, 220 GSM, 95/5 cotton spandex, at least 50% 4 way stretch.
Of course if you have any of the infamous Oatmeal French Terry~ it sews up into THE BEST Sloane! I have used this fabric for several of my Sloanes over the years along with Terra Tunics. This is the fabric I used for my husband’s LN Tailgate. My husband absolutely loves this fabric! This French Terry has more drape than most other French Terrys so it works for both the Ladies View A and View B. You can find this fabric HERE. However once the stock of it is gone~ it’s gone!!!

What I’m Sewing This Week~
This week I’m finishing up my new Sloane Sweaters. I made a wearable muslin of the Sloane since it had been a few years since I had sewn up View A. View A is a slimmer fit than View B. (I’ve sewn plenty of the View B as sweatshirts) The pattern I had traced out was an XL with FBA graded out to a 2X. Lately I have been sewing a 2X graded to a 3X on newer patterns I’ve been making. Going by the fit of the purple knit version seen above, I kept the XL in the shoulder and neckline area (as my Upper bust measurement in just below the 2X). I graded to the 2X for the sleeve and side seams. I’m was happy with my “test” version and I moved on to sewing the ones from my Fall Plans list.

I’ve been outside quite a bit taking advantage of the milder weather so I haven’t gotten as much done as I planned. I love riding my bike and I’m trying to get as many rides in before it just gets too cold!

Feature Friday Pattern From LN + the New Opus Vest = Perfect Holiday Outfit

The Encore Skirt is a great updated classic skirt pattern with a really clever pocket construction. The pocket construction is fun to sew and adds interesting visual details. The possibilities are endless with the different body style and length combinations you can create. Using different fabrics can completely change the look of this skirt.
This week kinda looks like Aria Week!! I really do love the LN Aria Button-down! I wore my brand new sweatshirt version and I can’t wait to make another one! I also wore another of my favorites, my soft washed corduroy version. This fabric is just so comfortable~ I wish I could get more!

The beginning of the week, I was sewing like crazy to get my new Opus Vest ready for release on Tuesday. I’m looking forward to making another one!
I also have a Fabric Promo for Raspberry Creek Fabrics to sew up. I’m working on a Sloane mashup with a cowl neckline. I’ve selected a Houndstooth Hacci Sweater knit which I think will be perfect for the drape needed for the cowl. I will be revealing that in December.
To make sure I get the sizing just right on my Sloane promo sweater, I’m sewing up a basic Sloane or two with some fabrics in my stash. After wearing a couple of Sloanes last week, I remembered how much I love this pattern~ and I haven’t sewn a new one in sweater knit for quite some time. I’ve sewn it up in the LN Compose Robe, LN Constellation, Grainline Cardigan(2) and my newest the LN Aria Buttondown. It has minimal stretch like a true sweatshirt fleece, so you need to choose your pattern wisely. If sewing a pattern with a bottom band you may need to use ribbing instead. Wide Wale Corduroy Resources
I purchased my washed wide wale corduroy a few years ago, and I wish I could get more of exactly the same. I’ve even on the search for something similar.
Yard Blox ~ This is a new to me company, however I do know a few people who have ordered fabric from them and they are very pleased,
They carry a corduroy they call “Elephant” Corduroy. It comes in a ton of colors too! I think it is a bit heavier than the corduroy I used for my Aria, which is why I would suggest you order a free sample from them. I just love when shop offer this! You can find that fabric HERE.
I also noticed that they carry several Japanese printed pinwale corduroys. Some are the same brand (HOKKOH) that I have ordered from some of my favorite shops previously, and sadly they are rather expensive. However, they have some “exclusive” prints that are reasonable. I would take a look at these as well. They would be perfect for the new Opus Vest! Check all of them out HERE.

The Details
I did not test the Opus Vest pattern, but as a Love Notions Ambassador I was able to get my hands on the pattern last week. I rushed over the weekend to get one sewn up for today’s release and I am so glad that I did! Talk about a satisfying sew with professional detailing! I simply love the. lining method~ it’s a little different than other techniques I’ve used~ but I really love the way it looks!
This is just the piece that I didn’t know my wardrobe needed! The Opus can be casual or business-like~ the choice is yours! I sewed up my version in a lightweight baby wale corduroy (a Designer Deadstock from LA Finch Fabrics last year). Come Spring, I am definitely sewing one up in linen!

Sizing & Fit
The Opus Vest is available in sizes XS-5X. A Full Bust pattern piece is included (like all new and updated LN patterns). Choose your vest size based upon your high bust measurement. If in-between sizes choose the smaller size.
If your full bust is more than 4″ larger than your high bust, use the included Full Bust Front pattern piece. Remember that if you use the full bust pattern pieces, 2″ will be added to the Finished Measurements of the waist and hip.
The Opus Vest is designed to be worn with or with out layers. If you plan on wearing it over a heavier shirt or sweater you may want to size up. The regular length version is meant to hit at the high hip on the average 5’5″ woman. The cropped version is approximately 4″ shorter.
My Fit & Modifications
For my version of the Opus Vest I made a 2X with the Full bust piece graded out to a 3X for my hips. This is exactly where my measurements fall on the sizing chart. My high bust is 42″ while my full bust is 46″. (This is a tad larger than I typically measure myself, but because of the fitted style of the Opus you must not “cheat” with your numbers~ as much as we all want to!)
Normally I always grade out one size for just my hips, but because of the princess seams I graded out to the 3X for my waist as well. I typically don’t sew or wear clothing that is as fitted as the Opus, so normally I don’t have to worry about my waist. You MUST take your waist measurement into account here.
When grading out for my waist and hips~ I only graded out on the side seams. I graded on the princess seams on my muslin~ and I found that I had a little “flair” at that spot and it wouldn’t lay flat. I removed that excess on my muslin and then it was fine.
It is also a good idea to check the Finished Measurements Chart so you can see exactly how much ease is included. Remember that wearing ease is important and just because those measurements are larger than the Body Measurements, it doesn’t mean you can use them to choose your size. Wearing ease in needed so you can actually move in your finished garment.
PLEASE MAKE A MUSLIN!!! Use just the front and back pieces. Stitch the princess seams and the side and shoulder seams. Assess the fit. Pay close attention to the length through the body~ make sure the waist it hitting you in the right spot. I am only 5 feet tall, however I am not short waisted, so the waist fit me in the correct spot. I am shorter from my waist to my full hip, which is why the vest may appear longer on me than on other testers. I can not stress this enough~ MAKE THE MUSLIN! I used a piece of quilting cotton from my deep stash.
After making my muslin~ I also determined that I had some excess fabric under the arm. This is something that I always wind up getting on any sleeveless garment. I know that from sewing my own clothes for so long, that I often have to take sleeveless garments in just under the arm. This is very common for those with a fuller bust. Patterns can’t always account for our bust size and position. I correct this by taking in the underarm at the side seam. I do that on the Side Front and Side Back pattern pieces. The photo below shows the alteration I’ve made to the pattern in green. Again~ a perfect example of why a muslin is important. You wouldn’t want to realize this AFTER you have already sewn your vest together lining and all!
I found the back belt to be a tad long for the larger sizes. I wound up cutting off 1″ length off of each one. Be sure to check this BEFORE you attach the belt to the center back piece. If will pretty involved to shorten this later on.
Fabrics & Notions
The Opus Vest is designed for light to medium weight wovens. Fabrics such as linen, chambray, poplin and broadcloth are recommended in the pattern. I feel that some other lightweight fabrics that would work nicely as well would be: corduroy, wool blends, wool suiting , flannel and even denim. Fabrics that have a bit more structure and not too much drape would look best. For Fall and Winter I think the Robert Kaufmann Mammoth Flannels would be perfect for the Opus. Although the pattern is designed for wovens, I think a stable knit would work as well, as long as it wasn’t too bulky. Any fabric, woven or stable knit if too bulky wouldn’t allow the points in the front to have a crisp appearance.

I highly recommend taking a look at all the tester versions paying close attention to the fabrics they have used to get a better idea how the fabric you choose may work. Remember different fabrics can create garments that look very different.
A silky fabric is recommended for the lining of the Opus. I purchased an inexpensive polyester satin from Hobby Lobby for my version. I typically like to order Bemberg rayon for lining my me mades. See the “Fabric Resources” section below.

If your fabric has a bit more drape, consider interfacing the entire front pieces with a lightweight tricot interfacing (see link below)
If sewing the full bust pattern pieces and your fabric is very structured, you may find it helpful to run a basting stitch on the side front piece to help ease it to fit to the center front piece. I had trouble with one of my test fit versions and a basting stitch would have helped to fit those piece together.

Fabric & Notions Resources
When giving fabric resources to my readers, I try to only include those that I have personally shopped at along with those that I know that my fellow LN Ambassadors and sewing creators have used. This doesn’t mean that other shops aren’t good to shop at. Online shopping for fabric isn’t always easy and many of my readers aren’t comfortable with it (yet).
Lining Fabrics
Pongee~ a polyester fabric that is another great lining choice. It has a smooth surface and soft drape.
Cali Fabrics has about 40+ colors of Designer Deadstock Pongee lining for $3.99 per yard. You can find them HERE.
Charmeuse Satin~ is a slightly heavier lining fabric that is great for vest and coats. Cali Fabrics has 40+ colors available at $3.99 per yard. You can see them HERE.
Note about Cali Fabrics. This is a family run store. Ron who makes videos of the new fabrics each week is very knowledgeable about fabric. I would recommend them for any type of fabric you are looking for.
I was able to grab some polyester satin fabric at Hobby Lobby for $6.99 (30% off). They have it in 12+ colors. I was really happy with this lining fabric, and in the future I would have no problem with using it again.
My go to fabric for lining is Bemberg that I purchase from the NYC garment district or a local sewing center (Stitch N Sew) but I didn’t have time to get any for this project. Although my local shop is only one town over~ it is not easily accessible as they are not open or Friday and Saturday.
What exactly is Bemberg? Bemberg lining is a high-quality, breathable, and anti-static fabric made from cotton linter, a byproduct of cotton production. It has a silky feel and is used as a luxurious lining in high-end garments like suits, jackets, and dresses because it is comfortable, durable, and drapes well. Bemberg is generally very durable. It’s resistant to tears and rips. While some very high-end suit manufacturers and consumers have long championed silk as the ultimate lining, it isn’t nearly as strong or long-lasting as Bemberg. Bemberg is also more comfortable and less expensive than silk.
WHERE TO BUY BEMBERG?
B & J Fabrics~NYC Garment District, this is where I purchase mine, 71 colors available
My favorite flannel is Robert Kaufman Mammoth Flannel which is one the thickest and best quality flannels I have ever worked with. They can be found in many online shops (and even quilt shops). Simply search in your favorite online shop. They can also be found in the following shops.
Style Maker Fabrics also carries a “Cozy Flannel” which is very similar to Mammoth Flannel. I have sewn this flannel up as well and it just gets softer and softer with each wash. They have many plaids AND prints available. You can find them HERE.
WOOL & WOOL SUITING
Light to Medium weight wool/wool blend suitings would sew up beautifully for an Opus Vest. A very classic look that could be both casual styled with jeans, or work appropriate with trousers (think LN Bridget Trousers) or a skirt ( LN Encore Skirt). When shopping for wools, the keyword to look for would be “suiting”. My top shop for this would absolutely be Cali Fabrics! For the price and quality you can’t beat this shop!
Cali Fabrics~ They have a huge selection of wool suitings, many being designer deadstocks from NYC. There are many to choose from and they would all make gorgeous Opus Vests. Check them out HERE.
Style Maker Fabrics~ also has a nice selection of Suiting fabrics. Some are rather expensive, but there are some that are very reasonable. This is one shop you never need to worry about what you will get in the mail! You can see them HERE.
CORDUROY
Different corduroys will result in different looks. I used a soft lightweight baby wale corduroy ( a designer deadstock from LA Finch Fabrics) for my version. LN Ambassador Chloe used a midweight corduroy for her version. A lot of corduroy I’m finding in the online shops are “stretch corduroy”. This may work for the Opus, but I think I would prefer a regular cotton corduroy for this project. You can find some at the following shops.
Cali Fabrics~ has a nice selection of corduroy (at great prices), from 21 wale to 8 wale in a variety of colors.
Style Maker Fabrics~ has a large selection of corduroy. Their Japanese Printed Corduroys are to die for! They are totally worth the price! Last week I sewed up the LN Aria in one and I’m in love with it!
Yard Blox~ I have NOT ordered from this company (yet)~ but I am very interested in their “Elephant” Corduroy that has a very wide wale. I’ll keep you posted if I wind up ordering from them
LINENS
A midweight linen would work really well for the Opus Vest. I’m considering a lightweight linen version for Spring for a more relaxed look. I do buy most of my linen in NYC from GrayLines Linen. They also sell online. I also purchase linen from Fabrics-Store.com. These 2 shops are my favorites for solid 100% linen.
Robert Kaufman Brussels Washer Linen is a nice rayon/linen blend with a some drape~ I’m thinking this would be perfect for a spring-time Opus. You can find it at several reputable online shops such as:
Cali Fabrics~ has a nice selection of linens, both solids and stripes/plaids. Many of these are designer headstocks.
Tricot Knit Interfacing
The product I have always used is Pellon Easy Knit Tricot EK130. Just before Joann Fabrics went into liquidation, I bought 2 entire bolts for 70% off. I still have an entire bolt left. Where I will buy it in the future, I haven’t decided. Upon “googling” it I see that many online retailers sell it~ including Amazon.
Cali Fabrics is one of my go-to online shops and they carry it HERE.
Wawak~ is an excellent source for sewing and tailoring needs. They have been around since 1907. I now order all my Gutermann Thread from them. I have not purchased their Tricot Interfacing yet~ but I know that several Love Notions Ambassadors use this tricot. The prices are good and shipping is fast!
They also sell rolls of 1″ wide Tricot interfacing, seen HERE.
Pressing Tools
You can find excellent pressing tools at Wawak such as a Pressing Ham/Tailor’s Hams, Sleeve Rolls and Sleeve Boards. Pressing is NOT something to skip! Pressing really can make a big difference in how your finished garment looks! Consider investing in one or all of these pressing tools if you don’t own them. (They also make great items to add to your Holiday Wish List!)
Last year I put this sleeve board on my Holiday Wish List~ and yippee my husband bought it for me. It was 200X better than the vintage one I was using that was so wobbly. I can vouch 100% for this product.

I tested the Coda Coat back in 2023~ and you can tell from the above photo taken yesterday I still LOVE this coat!!!! I find myself ALWAYS wanting to wear my pink quilted version (yes it’s made from a quilt from Home Goods). It really is the perfect coat to just quickly throw on on your way out the door. However, I don’t always want to wear pink. I’ve been on the hunt for a “block” type print in more neutral colors for a new version.
That is one of the great things about this pattern. You can create totally different looks depending on what fabric you choose. Your Coda could be Classic, Preppy, Boho, Eclectic or “Coastal Grandma” like mine all depending on what fabric you choose!

Last week I was rearranging my closet by moving my summer clothes to the back corners and pulling my warmer clothes front and center. As I did this I forced myself NOT to reach for my favorite makes. I wore things I probably haven’t worn in a few years! At the end of the day I determined if I was going to keep it or donate it. (PS~ there were a few things I only wore for a few hours and then remembered why I never wore them anymore~ to the donate pile they went! Sometimes this was because I since altered the pattern to fit me better or I just didn’t like the fabric or how it felt on)

* The Rockford Raglan is my favorite shirt to wear underneath during the cooler months. With the raglan sleeve, I feel there isn’t the bulkiness in the under arm area or at the shoulder area when wearing a shirt on top of it. Lightweight rib knits are perfect as baselayer. I bought most of mine from Mily Mae Fabrics a few years ago.(and I’m still wearing them!)
This week I’m sewing up the LN Aria Button-downs from my Fall Sewing Plans. I’ve finished the plaid sweatshirt fleece version and it’s LOVE. I wore it bike riding the very next day and it was PERFECT! I also sewed up a lightweight corduroy version.
Below is that shirt that I saw in Macy’s a few weeks ago. I would have gladly paid the sale price for it~ but in order for it to button at the bust, the shoulders and neckline would have been huge! Most RTW button downs are also cut to straight for me along with having sleeves that are way too long. I LOVE my version and it so sooo cuddly made up in the sweatshirt fleece from Raspberry Creek fabrics.
The vest pattern I was testing for Love Notions has been put on hold until the Spring~ which I think it really is more suited to. However~ be on the lookout next week for a different vest pattern to release from LN ~ the OPUS. I’m trying to get one sewn up this weekend, get photos taken and let you know all about next week! I was able to get 2 more items from my Fall sewing plans completed, Aria button-downs complete with buttonholes and buttons! But, sadly I haven’t been able to avoid adding anything else to my list. (Please tell me I’m not the only one who adds things to their sewing lists faster than they sew!)

Fabric Resources
Quilted Fabrics For the Coda Coat
I’m not a quilter, and I really haven’t wanted to quilt fabric for my Coda Coats. So if you’re like me~ you may want some resources for quilted fabrics. There isn’t much available that I’ve been able to find.
My pink and white version is made from a quilt I purchased at Home Goods. I did go looking there again, but they had mostly comforters that were much too thick. Here are my suggestions:
Go to Thrift shops and search for actual handmade quilts.
Go to Home Goods, Marshalls, Home Sense , TJ Maxx and similar type stores
Visit Brick and Mortar AND online Quilt shops.
Sometimes these are a more expensive option
Often most prints are Holiday and Children’s prints
Etsy~ I’ve seen some really pretty options there. Be sure to read through all the reviews for that seller before purchasing. Here are a few shops I found:
Little Legs Fabrics (UK company)~ has some beautiful ones including quilted double gauze, however shipping costs are high to the US
I See Fabric Shop~ has beautiful block prints (but only 2 colors remaining) that are PERFECT for the Coda!
Cotton Fabric Hub~ Now this shop has exactly what I’m looking for, however they have only been on Etsy for 2 months with no reviews yet. Fabric ships from India and it’s expensive. ($85 + shipping) How pretty are these!
My solution? I’m going to shop for block printed cotton quilts on Amazon. I think this will be the best choice for me.
Style Maker Fabrics has many “Puff” quilted solid color fabrics available in several colors if you’re looking for a more classic quilted coat. You can find them HERE. There is also a Black and Coral Floral printed quilted fabrics found HERE.
Sweater Knits for the Sloane or Arlington
I would look for fabrics such as: Hacci sweater knits, waffle knits, baby French Terry, rib knits
Style Maker Fabrics also carries a “Cozy Flannel” which is very similar to Mammoth Flannel. I have sewn this flannel up as well and it just gets softer and softer with each wash. They have many plaids AND prints available. You can find them HERE.

Here are a few photos from our bike ride on the Delaware & Raritan Trail (the D & R) that travels along the Delaware River(which separates NJ from PA). We rode from Bull’s Island State Park up the Frenchtown(one of my favorite places). We had lunch at one of our favorite spots , Chez Daniel.
Quiche Lorraine for lunch (naturally) and Spooky Soup~ Butternut Squash Soup with Red sweet potato. It was a beautiful day AND I hit 700 miles on my bike!
