My Go-To Layering Patterns For Fall~

1.Aria Button Down

If you can only pick one pattern, then it has to be the Aria button down. A classic button down is always a staple in any Fall wardrobe. Wearing it open over a turtleneck or long sleeved tee is such a classic thing to do! It can also be worn under a cardigan or blazer. In the NorthEast we have our “Indian summer” in October or November (sometimes both!). The days can get warm but as soon as the sun goes behind a cloud or begins to go down~ it get’s really chilly! Dressing in layers is always the key and the Aria makes it so easy to do!!

As soon as Fall weather is here~ my favorite Aria to pull from my closet is my washed corduroy version I made back in 2023. Some of my other favorites are made from 100% cotton flannel. Both the Robert Kaufman Mammoth Flannel or Style Maker Fabrics “Cozy Flannel” are perfect. (They are heavy and warm)

This chambray Aria below is one of my most worn Arias of all!! This is a linen rayon blend chambray and really is perfect for all seasons! It made its first appearance in my Spring Coastal Preppy Wardrobe~ but clearly it is getting worn year round! I simply pair it with black sweatpants or joggers, khakis, jeans and sneakers. Below you can see it worn with a La Bella Donna and an Oakley Vest!

I’ve also used the Aria pattern to make a vest for Fall and Winter. This 100% wool plaid vest gets a lot of wear. I made a few modifications to the Aria to create this vest. I also made this Fall “jacket” from a designer deadstock linen. I added lower lined pockets to both of these makes.

Note~ I don’t like the buttons on this vest AT ALL!!! I’m planning on removing these buttons and replacing them with small gold one. The buttonholes will be a tad too big, but I don’t ever really button this when wearing. That is one of the great things about taking photos of your makes, it lets you look at them and see this you don’t notice before. The vest is also a bit too large now~ so I’m thinking about adding some type of gathering at the waist. This 100% wool deserves to keep getting worn!

Visit this blog post for details on how I create my Aria “Jacket”.

Nervous about sewing a button down shirt? No need to be! There is an awesome sewing course you can purchase that holds your hand every step of the way. The 40% sale include all the sewing courses too!!  You can find the Aria Course HERE.

2. Oakley Vest

The Oakley vest is the perfect layering piece for Fall (and Winter too)! Plus, everyone needs a few vests in their closet! I love wearing mine over Arias and Constellations. Sloanes and Rockford raglans work really nice under the Oakley as well. The Oakley is also perfect underneath your jackets for added warmth without adding bulkiness in the sleeves. This cream quilted sweater knit version and my pink fleece version are the two that I wear constantly all Fall and Winter!

Those of you that read the Sew Mary Mac Blog regularly know that I’m an avid bike rider. My ultimate combination when bike riding in the fall is a Rockford Raglan as a “base layer”, topped with a Constellation Pullover or an Aria Button Down, an Oakley Vest and a Clef Coat on top!!

You can grab the Oakley Vest pattern HERE.

Read all about the Oakley Vest on this blog post. There you will find all the details on how I modified my pockets and collar(ivory sweater knit version)

3. Constellation Pullover

This pattern has really become a go-to for me. I wear them year round! I find it a great alternative to a “hoodie” or basic sweatshirt. It’s just as comfortable, yet looks so much more “polished”. It sews up so nicely in a variety of fabrics, which truly makes it suitable for all four seasons! For Fall, I love sweatshirt fleece~ even those fleeces that don’t have a ton of stretch work well with this pattern (just make sure to use something else for the bottom band if you’re choosing that view).

I haven’t made one yet from a stable sweater knit~ but that is certainly on my to-sew list for this Fall/Winter.

How do I layer with the Constellation? Underneath, I most often have on a La Bella Donna (cap sleeve version) in warmer weather and when it gets colder I switch to the Rockford Raglan. On top, it’s like the Constellation and Oakley were made to be worn together! It is one of my most worn combos!

A few of my other favorite fabrics to sew up into the Constellation are French Terry and swim knit! All the fabrics below were from Raspberry Creek Fabrics.

The Constellation really is the perfect pattern for all year long~ read this blog post to see how I make them for each season. (You’ll also find detailed info on the pattern)

The Constellation is designed for woman, but there is also a “matching” version for Men and Youth. Why not get ahead with holiday shopping and make pullovers for the entire family! My husband LOVES his and is always asking for another one!

4. Metra Blazer

What can be more perfect for Fall? The casual Metra blazer fits perfectly into my Preppy Fall wardrobe. Sewn up with the shawl collar it is classic yet more casual than a traditional blazer. Did I mention it’s also a quick and fun sew?!?!

I really need add a few more Metra Blazers to my closet!

I still love this Camel Houndstooth double knit version I made back in 2022. It gets worn quite often. My Fall “wishlist” for the Metra includes a classic navy blue ponte knit along with a houndstooth plaid in Fall colors (yes I need to actually find this fabric!). I sewed up a bright pink “fruit punch” Ponte version last Spring that I really love wearing it.

I’m actually heading into the city this week to see a show and I may just wear this camel houndstooth version! (I may even get an updated pic!)

5. Compose “Cardigan”/Robe

Cardigans are always part of a my Fall wardrobe. They are simply perfect for layering!

Don’t get me wrong I LOVE my Boyfriend cardigans. Since that pattern isn’t designed to meet at the center front, I find myself wanting a bit more coverage in the cooler weather. Cardigans are also great when your weight fluctuates and are between sizes. So, I often take my Compose Robe pattern and turn it into the perfect cardigan for me. This is also a great option if the knit you are working with doesn’t have enough stretch for other cardigan patterns. The Compose Robe pattern can be made in wovens or knits.

This pattern hack was perfect for this Italian Boucle that I purchased in the NYC Garment district a few years ago when I went to meet up with my daughters on my birthday. The following year for my birthday, I went back to visit Kashi at Metro Textiles wearing my pink Italian Boucle cardigan.

This fabric did not have enough horizontal stretch for the Boyfriend ~ so the Compose was perfect! For this version I narrowed the sleeve and cropped it. After wearing it all day long in the city the boucle did seem to “grow” in length. I’ve decided now to shorten it. I also wear this in the Spring and Summer too with a white linen blouse or tank top underneath. I loved my first one so much~ I made another last Spring! Again, an Italian boucle that didn’t have the stretch needed for a traditional cardigan pattern. This was fabric from Chic Fabrics in the NYC Garment District.

For info on the modifications I made to create this, read this blog post

And why not get a head start on Holiday gifts?!!?!?!?! The Compose Robe is a favorite in my family! I have 3 (ok maybe 4) and my daughters each have 2 and my sister has even gotten 2! I love that it works for both wovens and knits~ and those knits that don’t really stretch much! My favorite Compose Robe is the very first one I made from sweatshirt fleece. It is clearly my most worn LN pattern since I wear it every single day!!!

Which other patterns should you grab?

I recommend buying the recent new releases that you didn’t buy during the release sale. Patterns such as the the Somerset Top and Pants and the Interlude Jacket are good ones to buy and weren’t included in the site-wide sale last Spring.

Sewn up in a lightweight denim the Somerset pants would work perfectly for Fall. You can see a pair I made over on this “Weekly Stitch With Sew Mary Mac” blog post. The Somerset top is also perfect for layering under cardigans and jackets.

Want to learn more about the Somerset? Visit this detailed blog post.

Fall is the PERFECT time to sew a hip length Interlude Jacket! How pretty would the Interlude be in corduroy! (Hmmm….that just reminded me I have a floral corduroy I could use!)

What all the details on the Interlude? Visit this Sew Mary Mac blog post with ALL the details and sewing tips!

Did you miss a pattern you wanted during the crazy “Me Made May” pattern sale or one of the “Collection” Sales? This would be a great time to pick up any of the patterns that you may have missed as those patterns most likely will not appear in a “Collection” for another year
