Which Patterns Should You Grab?

Need help deciding which patterns to grab during this sale? First, I recommend buying the recent new releases that you didn’t buy during the release sale. Patterns typically don’t become a $6 pattern until one year after they have released. Patterns such as the Caprice Skirt, Timbre Top and Dress, Chorus Top and Dress are good ones to buy. These patterns may have released during the Spring and Summer months, however they will work perfectly for Fall too!

This is also a great time to pick up any of the recent $6 Feature Friday patterns that you may have missed. Patterns are only featured for $6 once a year, so if you missed one~ now is the time to grab it!

5 Patterns I’m Using for My Classic Fall Wardrobe

1. Aria Button Down

Why?

If you can only pick one pattern, then it has to be the Aria button down. A classic button down is always a staple in any classic wardrobe. Worn open over a turtleneck or long sleeved tee is such a classic thing to do! It can also be worn under a cardigan or blazer. In the NorthEast we have our “Indian summer” in October or November(sometimes both!). The days can get warm but as soon as the sun goes behind a cloud or begins to go down~ it get’s really chilly! Dressing in layers is always the key and the Aria makes it so easy to do!!

Nervous about sewing a button down shirt? No need to be! There is an awesome sewing course you can purchase that holds your hand every step of the way. The 40% sale include all the sewing courses too!!  You can find the Aria Course HERE.

This wool vest is a very simple hack from the Aria. Changes I made were:

  • Removed curve from the lower edge.
  • Finished armscye with bias binding. I used store bought since this wool was fairly thick.
  • Omitted the top pocket and added 2 lower lined pockets.
  • To line the pockets ~ Cut pocket lining pieces 2″ shorter than pocket pieces but the same width, sew pocket and lining right sides together with a 1/4″ seam leaving a small opening at the bottom(note the main fabric will fold over since the lining is shorter), Turn right side out and press. Topstitch along top edge if desired. Attach to shirt/jacket. This is the same procedure I used to create lower pockets on my lightweight Aria linen jacket below.

This is a slightly hacked Aria. I added lower patch pockets which are lined. I lengthened the sleeve and omitted the cuff. I simply hemmed the sleeves and rolled them up. This is 100% Linen from the NYC Garment District(Metro Textiles) a few years ago. I have it paired with a rib knit La Bella Donna.

This is a mid-heavy weight flannel from Style Maker Fabrics. I wore this last week for a 16 mile bike ride with my husband to a local state park. (Allaire State Park). This is probably my most worn combo for fall. This outfit features a Classic Tee(in a Triblend knit from Raspberry Creek Fabrics) underneath the Aria button-down. When it gets a tad chiller, I always add an Oakley Vest on top!

Added 11/2025: I’ve sewn up my corduroy Aria and it is now one of my favorites! But, I think my most favorite Aria for Fall/Winter is my new Sweatshirt Fleece version. I know I’ll be getting more of this sweatshirt fleece from Raspberry Creek Fabrics for another one!

I have several Arias planned for this Fall. I grabbed this Lightweight Corduroy and Quilted knit (see further down)from Style Maker Fabrics for an Aria and Oakley vest combo.

2. Caprice Skirt

Why?

The Caprice skirt pattern includes so many options! Made with different fabrics it can bring you through the Fall and Winter. It is all about fabric choice. I chose to use the Caprice to make a “Faux Dress” and it won’t be the only one I make! I love dresses, but as a retired teacher I just don’t need that many in my wardrobe. This is the perfect option for me!!

I used the Caprice skirt here to create a “Faux Dress”, this way I can mix and match the skirt and shirt to create several different outfits. This fabric is a rayon poplin which is heavier than a rayon challis, therefore perfect for cooler temps.

This Caprice Skirt is made from the View A/B back pattern piece. I used that piece as both the front and the back so it has just a single bottom ruffle. It is paired here with a Long Sleeved Band Camp Shirt and a Boyfriend Cardigan “Vest”. You can read more about this outfit here.

Fall 2024 Caprice Plans

For Fall, I want to make a simple Caprice from a lightweight chambray. I have these two in my stash, and I wasn’t sure which I wanted to use. However, when I was taking photos of them I had a thought!!! Maybe just maybe I’ll make another “faux” dress with them. I have more of the darker, so I would make that the skirt. For the shirt I could color block the lighter and darker together. Hmmmmmmmm. What do you think!?!?!

3. Clef Coat

Why?

This coat is such a quick and fairly easy sew! It is so versatile in that it works for both knits and wovens, lightweight and heavyweight fabrics. The possibilities really are endless! I tested this pattern and fell in love with it immediately!

I made this Robert Kaufman plaid flannel version back during testing(it was winter)~ and I can’t wait to wear it this Fall! When I made my flannel version, I used the drawstring option. But when I wore my fleece version constantly I realized I liked the elastic hem much better. So just today, I opened up the hem and added the elastic. I love it even more now!!

Do you have a stash of Joann Fabrics fleece like me? I honestly rarely bought fabric there, since mine stocked mostly just quilting cotton and fleece. Well guess what? Pull out that fleece because the Clef sews up so CUTE in Joann’s fleece. I made this version with fleece scraps that I had~ and I honestly wear it ALL the time. I took it on vacation a week ago to Block Island and wore it every morning and evening!

Fall 2024 Clef Plans

I LOVE my color blocked fleece version, however sometimes I can’t pull off all those colors with my outfit. I have this gray sweatshirt fleece that is soft, nice and heavy. However, it has NO stretch, so it’s just been sitting in my stash. I think it is going to make a great Clef Coat that I can just grab anytime! It’s actually on my cutting table right now~ so maybe just maybe I will be able to show it to you during the sale.

Note: I still haven’t gotten this one done! But it is on my 2025 sewing list, so hopefully in December I can get it sewn before before 2026!!

I’ve also added a Boucle to my Clef Coat sewing plans! I’m hoping to sew that one up in January!

While you are making yourself a new Clef Coat~ why not make a Bass Clef Coat too! My husband lives in this coat. He loves it so much. Underneath is a Tailgate Sweatshirt too!

4. Timbre Top and Dress

Why?

The Timbre is a super quick sew! It was just released in August, so if you didn’t grab it then, this is the first time it will be on sale! The 3/4 Bishop sleeve is simply perfect for Fall. It’s also a really comfortable top to wear! Depending on your fabric choice it can look classic and dressy~ yet it’s as comfy as a tee shirt! I love how the Timbre can be made in so many fabrics for totally different looks!

This navy Animal Metallic Dotted viscose crepe came from the NYC Garment District. My Instagram sewing friend Amber(@soisewedthis). “made” me buy it. (She’s from South Carolina and I met her in the city for the day. You should follow her on Instagram~ she makes awesome dresses!) You may have to zoom in, but there are small lurex threads woven throughout. The colors are just so rich in person. This will be perfect for a dinner out!

You can find this fabric HERE.

Fall 2024 Timbre Plans

Ever since I tested and sewed up a bunch of Timbres in the summer, I haven’t stopped thinking about one in a lightweight flannel! I pulled this from my stash and hopefully sooner than later it will be a Timbre with 3/4 Bishop sleeves. I’ve also had this beautiful rayon challis for two years. I think it needs a simple design to showcase the print~ so a Timbre it will become!

To read all about the Timbre and to see how it can really look different when sewn in different fabrics, check out this blog post.

5. Oakley Vest

Why?

Layering, Layering, Layering!!! The Oakley vest is the perfect layering piece for Fall (and Winter too)! I love wearing mine over Arias and Constellations. Sloanes and Rockford raglans work really nice under the Oakley as well. The Oakley is also perfect underneath your jackets for added warmth without adding bulkiness in the sleeves. (Joann Fabrics fleece also works really well for the Oakley vest too!)

  • Cream sweater knit Oakley vest worn with a Rockford Raglan underneath.
  • Pink Fleece Oakley worn over an Chambray Aria with a La Bella Donna top underneath.
  • Cream sweat knit Oakley worn over a corduroy Aria with a Classic Tee underneath.

Fall 2024 Oakley Plans

Both of these fabrics I just purchased from Style Maker Fabrics. The purple is a matte bubble lightweight coating. It’s available in several colors. (My plan is to wear it with the Arias I am making above). You can find that fabric HERE. Raspberry Creek Fabrics also has some nice colors available. The sage is a Diamond Quilted Double Knit.

Edited 2025: If you’re interested in quilted knits for the Oakley Vest, I suggest going to Surge Fabrics. They have a great selection right now! See them HERE. You can some beautiful quilted knits at Style Maker Fabrics as well. See them HERE.

Next week I’ll be taking a trip into the NYC Garment District to pick up zippers for these. My favorite place for zippers is SIL Thread Inc. I always look ahead at my upcoming plans so I can make one trip and buy all the notions I may need. They also have an online store~ http://www.zippersandthread.com.

Update on these Oakley Vests~ I have been unable to find bias tape or fabric to make bias tape that I am really happy with for the purple puff quilted fabric. I am rethinking my plans for this fabric. The sage green has been sewn up into an Oakley and although I like the fabric, it just doesn’t work as nicely as this vest as my other sweater knits. I’m currently working on 2 new quilted vest in a quilted sweater knit that works much better for this pattern.

Want more info on the Oakley Vest? I’ve written a few blog posts about how I’ve gotten a good fit, lined my pockets and how I enclosed the top of the zipper in the collar. You can find that information HERE.

Coming next week~ A new blog post all about Layering With Love Notions patterns, with all new Oakley Vests!!!

6. Chorus Dress and Top

Why?

It’s NOT too early to start thinking about the holidays! So I highly suggest grabbing this pattern now if you didn’t get it during the release. Just in case you need a nice dress in a jiffy~ THIS is your pattern!! I was amazed at how quickly I was able to sew my maxi dress version back when the pattern first released. Let me tell you, this is the “nicest” dress I own that is like secret pajamas! I took this dress with me on all three vacations I went on this summer~ and I wore it out to dinner several times!

Fall 2024 Chorus Plans

My plan is to find a nice wool jersey knit, most likely a solid color. I’m thinking navy blue, teal, burgundy or maybe even just black. I’m going to make another maxi dress with the 3/4 sleeve most likely. I just started shopping for this fabric, but if you happen to know of a shop that has something like this~ LET ME KNOW!!

Additional Patterns to Grab

  • For layering, add the Rockford Raglan, Sloane Sweater and La Bella Donna Top
  • Boyfriend Cardigan~ make it a vest like I did!
  • Constellation Pullover~ make them for the whole family.
  • Terra Tunic~ so versatile and sooo many options to choose from
