So what Love Notions patterns am I sewing up for Winter? When I think of Winter~ I think layers. Here are 5 patterns on my list this winter, my top three are my favorites to layer with!
1. Constellation Pullover
Why?
- Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall!~ this pattern is great for all 4 seasons!
- Half-zip front makes it so easy to put on and take off(much easier than a hoodie!)
- The half-zip makes it breast feeding friendly too!
- Great alternative to a hoodie
- Comfy as a hoodie~ but looks so much nicer
- Can be color blocked
- Huge front pocket!
- Available as the North Star for men, or the Navigator for kids so you can make them for the whole family!

Above are my two newest Constellations I made for this winter. The Oatmeal Quilted Sweater Knit is just so warm! I don’t remember where I found this knit, but Surge Fabrics has a great selection of quilted sweater knits. The dusty blue floral is a sweatshirt fleece from Raspberry Creek Fabrics. You can find that fabric HERE. Both of these have minimal stretch~ but work great with this pattern!
My Winter Constellation Plans Include:
- A Fair Isle Sweater knit that I’ve been holding on to for way too long!
- A Loop French Terry lounge wear pullover. Fabric in my stash
Be sure to check back later this week~ I’ll have a whole blog post up dedicated to the Constellation!
Purchase the Constellation Pullover HERE.
2. Oakley Vest
Why?
- Everyone needs at least one (or 2 or 3) vests in their wardrobe!
- THE perfect addition to your winter wardrobe.
- Perfect for layering under your coat for added warm, without bulkiness in your sleeves.
- One pattern gives you several different looks!
- Available in Girl’s sizing too!

My cream Oakley is made from a quilted sweater knit. I wore this constantly all Fall and I’m wearing it this Winter too. This fabric is from Surge Fabrics. They have a great selection of quilted knits. The pink fleece version is my grab and go vest. I reached for it all Fall when I just needed a lil something. I’m getting a lot of wear out of it this Winter too. This is the only time I ever found a use for the fleece that my Joann’s is filled with!
Stylemaker Fabrics also has some great quilted knit available too. I have a great navy triangle quilted cotton piece I can’t wait to sew up!
My Oakley Plans for Winter include:
- I’m currently working on a burgundy quilted knit version with corduroy bias tape. (Hopefully I will get it done soon!) ****Just finished it! See photos below!!!
- I purchased a light gray quilted knit for another Oakley as well~ I thought it would go with just about everything.
- The navy triangle quilted cotton knit I’m planning to sew up for the winter/spring transition.

Quilted knit is from Surge Fabrics. You can find this fabric HERE. Corduroy bias tape and zipper were purchased in the Garment District of NYC at SIL. You might be able to order it online, I visit this store everytime I’m up in the city and always bring tons of swatches with me to get zippers and bias tapes that match perfectly! HERE is their website.

3. Aria Button Down
Why?
- Great for layering in cold weather!!
- 3 Length Options: Shirt, Tunic and Dress(knee length)
- 3 Sleeve Options: Sleeveless, Short, Long
- 2 Collar Options: Banded and Standard Collar
- Dress Options: Tie Belt or Drawstring Waist
- Great pattern for someone new to shirt making
- Great construction details, such a yoke burrito method and the tower placket on the sleeve.
- AMAZING ARIA Course! A step-by-step on demand video tutorial is available for purchase.

The Pink Plaid Aria is made from Robert Kaufman Mammoth Flannel. It is a wonderful heavier weight cotton flannel. It just gets softer and softer the more I wear it! I love it so much I have another planned. This plaid was purchased from Raspberry Creek Fabrics. They have a great selection of these flannels. The corduroy version is also on constant rotation this Fall and Winter. It’s a washed corduroy that I purchased from Stylemaker Fabrics. This color might be sold out, but it is available in other colors HERE.
My Winter Aria Plans Include:
- Another Mammoth Cotton Plaid version!! One of the few fabric purchases I will make this Winter.
- A color blocked flannel version ~ Fabric in my stash
The Oakley and Aria make the BEST combination for cold weather. All Fall I wore them together, but I also love them for winter to keep myself warm and toasty!

4. Whistler
Why?
- Pockets, Pockets, Pockets! The best thing about the Whistler is the amazing inset pockets!
- So many options: top, tunic and dress, hood or shawl collar, gathered or plain front.
- Talk about comfort!!! So comfy to wear, yet can look dressy depending on fabric choice.

The gray French Terry version was the first Whistler I made, before I was a Love Notions Ambassador. I still love wearing this one! I used the wrong size of the fabric for the shawl collar. This fabric was probably 10 years old when I pulled it out of my stash! The tan version is a stretch velour from Surge Fabrics. Talk about soft and warm!! This is still in stock. You can find it HERE.
My Winter Whistler Plans Include:
- Cable Sweater Knit version~ fabric from my stash

5. Terra Tunic
Why?
- The Hooded version is by far my most favorite version for Winter!!
- This pattern is soooo versatile. It can be casual or work appropriate depending on fabrics and options chosen. Most of mine are casual~ I’m a retired teacher!
- Options: 6 neckline variations (and they are all awesome!), 4 sleeve lengths, elbow patches and welt pockets. My favorite sleeve length for Fall is the 3/4 sleeve.
- Can be worn year round! (It even makes a great beach coverup come summer!)

For Winter the V-neck hooded version is my favorite! The black animal print version is made from a mid-weight sweater knit from Stylemaker Fabrics. The Oatmeal Palm Leaves version is the “infamous” Oatmeal French Terry from Raspberry Creek Fabrics. It is just the cuddliest Terra ever!!!
My Winter Terra Tunic Plans Include:
- A solid sweater knit hooded version~ fabric from my stash
- Another Oatmeal French Terry hooded version. ~ fabric from my stash
- A funnel neck version hacked to have more of a cowl neck.~ I KNOW I have fabric in my stash I can use.
