The Details

The Breckenridge Henley is an easy to wear top, tunic or dress. Meant for knit fabrics, this style is perfect for all seasons! The neckline is an unconventional henley style that is amazingly easy to sew! Believe it or not buttonholes aren’t even required!

  • 3 length options: shirt, tunic or dress
  • 3 sleeve options: short, long cuffed or roll- tab 3/4
  • Simple to sew henley placket. (Seriously!!!)
  • Optional buttonholes

Sizing and Fit

The Breckenridge Henley is available in sizes XS-5X. There is a full bust front pattern piece included. Remember to select your size according to your high bust measurement. If between sizes, choose the smaller size. Remember that when using the full bust pattern piece, 2″ will be added to the was it and hip finished measurement. Keep this in might when deciding to grade in/out for your waist and hips.

My Fit Modifications

Whenever I sew a new to me pattern, I always make a wearable muslin from stash fabric. I used a piece of double brushed poly for this first version. I used my high bust measurement (41″) to select my size of XL. Since my hips are larger, I graded out to a 2X for the hips. I am only 5 feet tall, but I did not shortened my top. After I make my “tester” version I evaluate it and decide if I want to make any changes for my next version.

My second version is the Kelly Green rib knit henley.. For this version I did make a few changes. I decided to remove the waistline shaping so that it didn’t cling to my “fluffiness”. I also adjusted the sleeve.

I typically do NOT need a full bicep adjustment, but I felt I needed a tad more room in this sleeve to be comfortable for me. Make sure you check this BEFORE you cut out your fabric. Again, I did not adjust the length. The only other change I made to this henley was the sleeve. I wanted a 3/4 sleeve, so I simply left off the the cuffs.

Fabrics and Notions

The Breckenridge Henley top and dress is designed for knit fabrics with at least 40% stretch. Light to medium weigh knits such as jersey , rayon, jersey, rib knit, waffle knit and sweater knit will all work well.

For my tester/wearable muslin, I used a double brushed poly which worked really well for this pattern. I typically don’t like or wear DBP but it was a perfect weight for the Breckenridge. My Kelly green version is made from a wide rib poly spandex blend. I did find this knit to be a tad thin for my liking. I don’t care for fabrics that are too drapey and show all my bumps and lumps. A knit that is has too much drape may not support the weight of the placket. I always suggest searing the Love Notions Facebook Group to see example of a pattern.

See my vest hack below and you can see that even mid weight sweater knits work too!!

Notions

  • 3-5 buttons, 1/4″-3/8″ (2 additional buttons are needed for the roll tabbed sleeve
  • Scrap of knit tricot interfacing
  • Fabric Marker (marking the placket it a necessity)
  • Thread

Sew Mary Mac’s Tips for Sewing the Breckenridge

  • Remember that button placement is almost always a suggestion. Place your buttons as you like them.
  • Make sure your fabric for the placket has enough recovery. If it doesn’t I suggest using a coordinating fabric that does.
  • Make sure you mark the placket pattern piece and opening well. Try to make them exact, this will make the placket so much easier to sew. Sometimes when printing multiple sizes the “T” markings can get very confusing. In cases like this I will print out just the page with the neckband in just the XL. Use the diagram on page 3 to determine what page to print.
  • Don’t let the placket scare you…it is so much easier to sew than it looks. If you need a little hand holding, be sure to click on the video link in the tutorial.

These are all so cute on you. I love the vest idea and also the 3/4 sleeve! Thanks so much for the info on needing a full bicep adjustment. I need that anyway, so it’s super helpful to know I’ll need more on this.
