Love Notions Timbre Double Gauze Tips &The Weekly Stitch with Sew Mary Mac~ August 29, 2025

……Welcome To My Sewing Room

Feature Friday Pattern from Love Notions~

I am SOOO excited about the the Feature Friday Pattern from Love Notions this week. This is the very first time the Timbre Top and Dress has been the Feature Friday pattern! I tested this pattern last summer and immediately sewed up a closet full of them! It is perfect for hot summer days yet transitions into fall as well. The Timbre is just $6 today, 8/29/2025. Use my code 10MARYMAC for an additional 10% off.

The Details

The Timbre is a classic peasant top and dress. This pattern has so many options~ you can make a closet full of them and they’d all be different! It’s a simple design that allows your fabric to be the star!

Depending on your fabric choice it can be casual or dressy! Choose seersucker and gauze for a cool casual top or dress. Select a silky poly blend or rayon challis for a top suitable for work. Or~ be like me and sew one up in navy plaid linen for that casual preppy coastal vibe. If you follow my sewing journey, you know I’m always adding to my coastal preppy wardrobe!

Tips For Sewing The Timbre In Double Gauze

Double Gauze is one of my favorite fabrics to wear especially when it’s hot and humid. However, Double Gauze can be finicky to sew~ there is definitely a learning curve to sewing with it. I am by no means an authority on sewing double gauze. Before I ventured into sewing with it, I read everything I could about working with it. There is a lot of information out there, and some very different opinions on how to work with it. These are some tips that I have found helpful to me. I highly suggest you practice with it first to see what works best for you. That being said~ the Timbre top is an excellent choice for double gauze.

  • Make sure the pattern you are sewing is suitable for double gauze. A pattern for a relaxed fit garment will work much better than a pattern for a garment with a more fitted silhouette. Think patterns with simple details!
  • Prewash your fabric the way you plan to launder your finished garment. (I suggest this for ALL fabrics)
  • Double gauze can snag fairly easily, be sure to use fine pins or weights when cutting out and fine pins or clips when assembling.
  • Be sure to use a new sharp needle, 70/10 or 80/12 work best.
  • If you have a walking foot~ use it!
  • PRESS don’t IRON when sewing. Lift and lower your iron when needed. Do NOT glide your iron over the fabric~ it WILL stretch it out. I actually prefer to hold my iron a few inches above my fabric and steam it~ then finger press fabric in place.
  • Staystitch the neckline to prevent it from stretching our of shape
  • Handle cut pieces as little as possible as this fabric will “grow” the more it is handled.
  • When sewing, you may find it best to start sewing a tiny bit away from the raw edge. The open weave is often hard for the needle to catch so it then gets pushed under the throat plate and become chewed up into a little ball.
  • After you have finished sewing, wash garment (I actually use the Steam Fresh setting on my dryer) to bring it back to the correct size. I highly suggest doing this before accessing your new garment true fit.
    • This is extremely important. The first time I sewed up double gauze I was so disappointed because my final garment was too oversized. My top had grown as I handled it. It was HUGE! One wash and dry cycle later~ I loved it!

I hope these tips are helpful, and if you haven’t sewn with double gauze give it a try if you haven’t already. If you love sewing with double gauze, leave me a comment with any additional tips you may have!

Want Even More Timbre Information?

I have sewn a bunch (I’ve lost count) of Timbres. To see some of my collection visit this BLOG POST to see the Timbre sewn up in various fabrics, my sizing and alterations along with “Tips for Sewing the Timbre”

Want to change up the Timbre a little bit? Visit this BLOG POST to see how I used a fabric with a border, lined eyelet fabric and created a ruffle cuff.

Curious about how a fabric’s drape can affect the look of a pattern? I wrote a blog post for Raspberry Creek Fabrics all about drape and used the Timbre pattern to show how different levels of drape can affect the finished look of a garment. You can visit the RCF Blog HERE. All fabrics used were from Raspberry Creek Fabrics.

What I Wore Last Week~

Last week we had a wonderful vacation to my husband’s hometown of Newport, RI! We spent time with family and friends AND played tourist as well. I wore me-made items every day~ but didn’t get pictures of everything (was just having too much fun to stop for photos!). Here are some of the Me-Mades I wore .

  • LN Caprice Skirt in a vintage embellished gingham from my deep stash(wore this on the drive up)
  • LN Tinley Skort in swim knit from RCF for a hike at Sachuest Point(changed after driving up)
  • LN Timbre Dress in a teal gauze from Cali Fabrics (That’s the door of our Inn)
  • LN Tinley Skort in swim knit with a LN Aria Button Down in Rayon/Line Chambray for a bike ride all the way to Providence (35 miles!) and a stop at Blount’s Clam Shack.
  • Another LN Tinley Swim Knit Skort for a hike on Cliff Walk ~ that’s the Chinese Tea House on the lawn of the Marble House Mansion then rode our bikes to visit to Rough Point Mansion
  • Yes, another LN Tinley ~ skirt made from Madras Patchwork from the garment district in NYC this time with a white linen LN Aria for lunch on the lawn at Castle Hill (another quick change at the car!)
  • My LN Tinley Skirt and Aria on the rocks along Ocean Drive
  • LN Aria Button Down in navy gingham linen. (Ignore the one cuff flipped down)
  • LN Constellation Pullover in RCF swim knit on the Aquidneck Schooner for a morning sail and mimosas.

What I’m Sewing This Week~

I was able to get most of my sewing plans completed this week. My sewing week was interrupted by a trip to the city (NYC) to babysit my “grand puppy” as my daughter and son-in-law needed to be out of town one day. This is what I accomplished:

  • Raspberry Creek Fabrics Strike-Offs~2 Brindle & Twig Lounge Sweatshirts for my great niece and nephew. These are just 2 of the great new prints that RCF has for Halloween.
  • I did NOT get my muslin made of the Pattern Emporium Lyrical Blouse~ but I did determine the size I wanted to make and got the pattern printed out. My goal is to tape & trace this weekend. (Yes, I am team trace!)
  • Pink and Orange gauze fabric from Cali Fabrics ~ I did get that sewn up. I plan to wear it and get good photos later this weekend~ but here is a sneak peek. I wound up using the Love Notions Melody Dolman for this fabric and now I need another one made in double gauze! (This is why my “to-sew” list never gets any shorter!

My Sewing Plans For Next Week~

I’m excited to work on a few transition pieces, as the evenings are beginning to be a tad cooler here. Raspberry Creek Fabrics is also getting ready to release their 2025 Christmas line. These are my sewing goals for next week:

  • Raspberry Creek Fabrics Strike-Offs(Hopefully these fabrics will get here soon~ if not next week)
    • LN Constellation Pullover in French Terry
    • LN Juliet Top hacked into a nightgown in Cotton Jersey
    • True Bias Marlo Cardigan Sweater in French Terry
  • Chambray button downs
    • One Long Sleeved LN Aria Button down
    • One Short sleeved~ either LN Aria or LN Melody

This is the TB Marlo Sweater. It is my favorite cardigan pattern. I have found I like a length between the cropped and long versions. That is the beauty of sewing our own clothes!

Fabric Resources

What is Double Gauze?

So what is double gauze(often called bubble gauze)? This is a fabric that is made up of two layers of fine cotton gauze. The layers are held together with tiny stitches, which basically traps air between the layers. This results in a lightweight fabric that is snuggly, almost squishy. It is both airy and cozy. When washed a crinkly texture is created.

I also purchase all my swim knits from RCF. Some are purchased from their retail collection, others I have had custom printed.

Cali Fabrics

Cali Fabric~ Pink and Orange Plaid Designer Cotton Gauze #30144. This is a Designer Deadstock fabric so when it’s gone it’s gone!

Teal Burnout Cotton Gauze (#30142). This is also a Designer Deadstock fabric.

Bonus Photos: Our Trip to Newport, RI To Visit My Husbands Family & Friends(and to act like tourists too!)

We spent an awesome week in Newport, RI visiting my husband’s family and some friends. My husband had a blast visiting all his favorite places~ and we also played tourist while there. We visited Rough Point~ the mansion of Doris Duke which included an exhibit of some of her fashion collection. We spent an afternoon at Castle Hill eating lunch on the terrace and relaxing in adirondacks on the lawn watching the sailboats. We spent a morning out on the water sailing which is always my favorite. It had been 9 years since we had been there~ and we are already planning to head back up in December.

I really enjoy your weekly blog. Thank you!
I am gearing up to making my second LN Tinley straight skort, this time with board short material. Last one was a knit, so this will be a less stretchy fit.🤞🏻
