A Closet Full of Clef Coats

Love Notions is starting the New Year off with a BANG! The first $5 Friday Pattern is actually 3 patterns! The whole Clef Coat Collection is on sale today, each one just $5 a piece. Remember to use my new code MARYMAC10 for an extra 10% off. This means the Ladies Clef Coat, the Mens Bass Clef Coat AND the Kids Treble Clef Coat are all on sale. This pattern released in January 2024 so this is the very first time it is being offered for just $5.

I am truly a BIG fan of this pattern, hence why I now have made 6 of them~ plus 2 for my husband! Wow 8 total!! This is such a classic coat that can look entirely different depending upon the fabric you choose. Plus It’s so much easier to sew than you may think!

This is my newest version made from the softest Vintage Wide Wale Corduroy from Blackbird Fabrics. I made a few changes to this one to elevate it just a tad. You can read all about all the little touches I added over on the Love Notions Blog.

The only major change I made to my newest corduroy version was to omit both the drawstring AND the elastic at the bottom hem. I did this for a very specific reason~ bike riding. I wear my Clef Coats all the time and I also ride my bike A LOT. I found myself tugging the back of my coat down on longer bike rides as it would tend to ride up. The only additional size modification I made was to grade out a tad more at the lower hip so the coat is not as straight. Again, this makes it perfect for long bike rides. Now I just need to wait for some warmer weather so I can test it out!

For complete Clef Coat pattern details, sizing and modifications I made on all my Clef Coats visit this Sew Mary Mac Blog Post. You’ll also find lots of tips to make sewing your own Clef Coat a breeze. You can find this blog post HERE.

So now that you’ve seen my newest Clef Coat, let’s take a trip down memory lane!

This was my very first Fit Test Version. Made from a stretch twill with the drawstring hemline. I used twill tape to cover the neckline seam.

This was my Final Test version made in Robert Kauffman Mammoth Flannel. After wearing this as just a drawstring version, I opened up the hem and added elastic as well. You can see my original version of the blog post mentioned above.

I immediately made this fleece version after testing. Honestly, It’s my most worn version because I just throw it on for bike rides and errands. This is actually just made from left over scraps of Joann Fabrics fleece. I’m planning another fleece version soon!

This was my Fit test version of the Mens Bass Clef Coat. Made from fleece, my husband wears this constantly.

This was my final tester version of the Bass Clef. This is the jacket that inspired me to make a corduroy version for myself. My husband loves this coat! He always gets complements on it and is always happy to say I made it for him.

You can read more about the Bass Clef Coats on this blog post.

This is my favorite Clef Coat~ and probably my most favorite make of 2024! This is a patchwork Madras plaid fabric and it is lined with loop French Terry. All the details on this Clef can be found on the blog post. This blog post also contains directions on lining your Clef. Read all about it HERE.

This Clef is one I made for Raspberry Creek Fabrics to promote their Christmas release. This is French Terry and I have to say I wear it more than I every anticipated! French Terry makes a great little throw on jacket to wear in the house when it’s cold! I think I got more use out of this as a Clef Coat than I would have a as sweatshirt! (I mean how many Christmas sweatshirts do I really need?)

So there you have it! Eight Clef/Bass Clef Coats!

Bonus Pic

Bill and I modeling our fleece Clef Coats. We wear these so much! Playing around with color blocking and contrast zippers can be a lot of fun!

Fabric Resources

Vintage Wide Wale Corduroy in Camellia~ this is from Blackbird Fabrics in Canada. Everything I have ever bought from them is such high quality! Worth every penny! This fabric comes in a few colors. You can find mine HERE.

  • Olive Green Stretch Twill ~ from my deep stash
  • Blue/Pink Robert Kaufman Mammoth Flannel~ this exact plaid is hard to find, but any of the Mammoth Flannels will work really well for the Clef. You can find them at Raspberry Creek Fabrics and Style Maker Fabrics.
  • All Fleece was purchased at Joann Fabrics! Finally something I Joann that I can use!
  • Redwood Distressed Soft Corduroy for the Bass Clef was purchased from Style Maker Fabrics. This color is sold out, but it is available in black HERE.
  • Patchwork Madras Plaid was purchased in 2023 from Cali Fabrics. They often get designer deadstock fabrics that sell our very quickly. Get on their mailing list or follow them on Instagram. It is no longer in stock there, however it often pops up in various online fabric stores. If you search “Robert Kaufman Nantucket Madras” you will see some in various color combinations available from some Etsy shops and other retailers. Look specifically for the Robert Kaufman brand, since I have found others sometimes are not constructed as well as this.
  • Fair Isle French Terry~ this is from the Christmas 2024 Collection from Raspberry Creek Fabrics. It is no longer available as retail, but can be custom printed. RCF always has current holiday prints to select from, as well as a Fall/Winter Collection. I love the quality of their French Terry. The more you wash and wear it, the softer it gets!
