Game Day Jersey Is A Game Changer

…A Mini Pattern Hack Blog Post~ Turning The Game Day Into A Nightgown

The Game Day Jersey is the perfect pattern to make your own “team” jerseys, but this pattern can be so much more!! I’ve modified this pattern into my favorite nightgown pattern!!! It took a few tries to get it just right, but now I have the perfect nightgown pattern!!!

There is a whole family of Game Day Jerseys available: Women’s, Men’s and Kids. Today, Friday June 28 they are all on sale for $5 each as the Love Notions Feature Friday patterns! Use code 10LOVEMARY for an additional 10% off.

You can read my detailed post about the Game Day Jersey HERE. This post has all the details, sizing and fabric informations you may want to know. There are also some tips for sewing up your own Game Day Jerseys.

My favorite nightgowns were literally falling apart. Years ago, my oldest daughter worked for company that designed and produced the Eileen West and Kate Spade nightgowns. I would go to the sample sales and pick few up for $5 each. Fast forward a few years, and she no longer designs for them so I went shopping for a new Eileen West nightgown. Imagine my shock when I saw the prices, $65 and up!!! Last year I turned the Juliet Top into a nightgown when it first released. You can see that HERE.

As a busty curvier woman over 60, I don’t like nightgowns that are straight and close fitting. I love the V-neck line of the Game Day Jersey and knew it would make a great nightgown. Sew…….I added some fullness to the front and back and VIOLA~ my new favorite nightgowns. It’s a super simple hack!

Alterations to the Pattern

How To Add Fullness

  • Fullness is added simple by moving the pattern pieces 3″ off the fold when cutting out your pattern pieces.
  • You can add more or less fullness , the preference is yours. The sage green palm version pictured above was placed 6″ off the fold, but I felt that was too much fullness!

Adjusting the Back Length

  • The Game Day Jersey and dress is designed to have a longer back. The back pattern piece should be shortened to be even with the front.
  • Fold in the side vent extension piece in when cutting.

Construction

  • Construct the yoke as per pattern directions. You can use the band pieces provided with the pattern. (I have used them on the sage green palm leave version). I chose to finish the neckline with a knit binding instead. See directions below on how to do that.
  • Stitch 2 rows of gathering stitches across the top of the front and back.
  • Pin the front and back pieces to the yokes, pulling up the gathering stitches. I like to begin gathering a few inches in from the sides, so that most of the gathering is in the center.
  • Sew yoke and front/back pieces together. Press seam towards yoke and topstitch.
  • Attach sleeves or armscye binding. (I have chosen to make mine sleeveless and I use the same binding techinique that I use for the neckline.)
  • Stitch side seams. If you are making the nightgown sleeveless, you may need to adjust the side seam under the arm so that it doesn’t gape. Try on your nightgown at this point and check. See photo below to see the adjustment I made on almost all of my sleeveless garments.
  • Hem!!

Finishing the Neckline/Armscyes With Knit Binding

  • Cut a strip of fabric 80-85% of the length of your neckline or armscye. Make the strips 1.25″ wide.
  • Pin the Right side of the binding to the wrong side of the neckline/armscye.
  • Stitch using a scant 3/8″ seam. Press away from the seam.
  • Fold raw edge of the binding over the seam allowance to the right side bringing the raw edge to the stitching.
  • Fold again to the right side, encasing the raw edges.
  • Pin and topstitch in place.

This is also the method I use when finishing the neckline of my Classic Tees and La Bella Donna tops.

Fabric Resources

All of my Game Day Jersey Nightgowns were sewn up in an 8 X 3 rib knit from Raspberry Creek Fabrics.

What does 8 X 3 mean?

Rib knits have textured vertical lines that are raised.  8 X 3 means there are 8 knit stitches and then 3 purl stitches.  If you’re not a knitter, that might mean absolutely nothing to you.  Simply put, when looking at the fabric, the ribs are wider with a smaller space in between them.  (For example, a 2 X 2 rib would have ribs and spaces that are even in size.)

This fabric is perfect for so many things!  It has wonderful drape and is easy to cut out and sew!  It’s perfect for T-shirts, dresses, pajamas and nightgowns.  Even though it is polyester, it has a coolness to it.  It doesn’t wrinkle, making it great for packing and traveling.  It is very easy to care for, it truly is wash and wear.  Living in a very hot climate, some might find this too hot during certain times because of the polyester.  If you like DBP, then you would like this as well.  It does have a much silkier/cool hand to it than DBP.

Each season and holiday a new group of prints are available at “Club” pricing. This just means that these collections are ready to ship and are reduced in price.

You can find the current retail Club Rib Knits HERE.

You can also custom print any design they have in their design library or one that you own onto the rib base. There are thousands of designs in the library!

I also love using this fabric for my Vivace, Juliet and La Bella Tops and even some Classic Tees. Below are some examples.

I absolutely love this nightgown idea, but tried it today and it is huge on me. I am using the 3X and I’ve made the pattern as a dress before and it is fine. Was I only supposed to move the top of the pattern out 3 inches?
