My Favorite Combination= Love Notions + Style Maker Fabrics

First……….A Little About Me Made May

Happy Me Made May! Are you participating? I’ve participated the last few years, but this year I decided to sit out. I’m still enjoying following along on Instagram with everyone else! It’s a great way to find new patterns, new fabric resources and new sewing “friends”. If you aren’t familiar with Me Made May, you can read all about it here.

I’m not participating for a few reasons. I wear Me Mades everyday, so I don’t “have to try to wear them each day”. My oldest daughter is getting married this week, so I’ve been pretty busy with that. What I decided to do for Me Made May this year, was to pull things from my closet that I don’t typically reach for. I’m wearing them and then deciding whether to keep them or pass them on. A few items I’ve worn for an hour or so, then I found they annoyed me for some reason or another~ in this case I changed and put that item into my donate pile.

Me Made May is also a great time to evaluate your wardrobe and see what gaps your wardrobe may have. So, that may mean buying some new fabrics to help fill those gaps! Who doesn’t love buying new fabrics!

These are all versions of the Rhapsody Blouse. All these of these rayons are still available.

Style Maker Fabrics

This month, I wanted to introduce you to Style Maker Fabrics on Textile Tuesday. This is one of my go-to fabric shops. I’ve been a loyal customer since 2018. If I had to pick ONE reason I love Style Maker Fabrics it would be the quality! This small family owned business goes above and beyond to make sure ALL the fabrics they sell are top quality.

To me, buying fabric and sewing are two completely separate hobbies. I LOVE fabric, always have always will. I often buy fabric just because it’s pretty and I like it~ with no intended purpose. It often winds up in my stash and eventually will get used. BUT~ my purchases from Style Maker are very different. This is the shop I go to when I’m looking for something for a specific project. Whether it’s a new Rhapsody Blouse for summer or a basic Classic Tee, I can always find what I’m looking for.

My personal favorites

  • Rayon Challis and Crepe. SM Fabrics carries a great selection of high quality rayons. Perfect for a new Rhapsody, Harmony or Caprice Skirt. Very few shops carry a true Rayon Crepe fabric. What a lot of other shops call Rayon Crepe is really a Rayon Crinkle. A true crepe has a pebble like texture in the weave.
  • Cotton Modal Jersey Knit. THIS is my go-to for basics. Whether a Classic Tee or a La Bella Donna. It feels so dreamy. It may be a tad more expensive than other fabrics, but it is worth the price.

Below is the the top I wear more than any other in my closet. So much so, that I am going to make another one exactly like it! This is the La Bella Donna top, with a modified neckline. You can read how I sew my neckline in this blog post. This is the Cotton Modal Jersey Knit in white. Notice that is doesn’t cling to every lump and bump and isn’t see-through! You can find the Cotton Modal Jersey HERE.

The Rayon Challis skirt above is the new Caprice Skirt. This magenta rayon challis is available in 2 colors! I’m so tempted to order the green as well! You can find this rayon challis HERE. To read more about my Caprice Skirt Collection, visit this post on the Sew Mary Mac Blog.

I love working with Rayon Challis, Rayon Crepe, Rayon Voile and Rayon Lawn. The saying “you get what you pay for” really matters when shopping for it. Poor quality rayon challis doesn’t hold up very well, doesn’t wash very well and if often just a waste of your money. Every piece of rayon I have purchased from Style Maker Fabrics was been a pleasure to work with and wear. I always prewash my rayons and tumble dry low. After they are sewn, I machine wash them on cold and hang to dry. I do this because I love these garments and what them to last!!!

The patchwork Rayon challis Rhapsody Blouse shown below I have been wearing for over 2 years! It goes on every vacation with me. The longer sleeve versions of the Rhapsody are such good pieces for transitional weather. The patchwork rayon challis was recently restocked at Style Maker, so you can still grab some. Want to see all my Rhapsody Blouses? Visit this Sew Mary Mac blog post for a peek at them along with some tips to sewing up the Rhapsody Blouse.

This is a Cap Sleeve Rhapsody Blouse. The cap sleeve is my go-to sleeve for summer casual wear. I find these tops perfect for hot and humid summer days, when you don’t want clothes sticking to you. Rayon is always a good choice! I am ALWAYS a sucker for a “mixed print”. This Paisley Floral Rayon Voile from the Spring Release just called to me! I’m tempted to order the black/blue colorway as well.

Sometimes, I just love the statement sleeve you get from making the 3/4 Flounce for the Rhapsody. This blue geometric print is a true rayon crepe. The fabric has a bubble texture to it~ not a crinkle texture. This fabric is easy to find in RTW, but not always easy to buy for sewing!

Style Maker Fabrics always has a great selection shirting fabrics. Cotton poplin, Cotton Voile, Cotton Lawn and Cotton Sateen to name just a few. I loved the colors of this Spring Madras Plaid Cotton Lawn and I new if was perfect for a summer Aria button-down! Read more about my Aria over on this blog post.

Style Maker Fabrics always has some great rib knits too! I know that every season I’ll be able to grab a knitted stripe(as opposed to a printed stripe) rib knit for a classic tee or La Bella Donna. I made my favorite mashup~ what I call the Bella Classic with this fuchsia and coral stripe. You can read about this hack over at Sew Mary Mac. I loved this stripe so much, that after I received it, I went and ordered the navy and lavender version as well! This rib knit has a lot of stretch. On my navy version, I will be sizing down for a closer fit.

Some Future Sewing Plans

As soon as I recuperate from the wedding, I have a lot of plans for some of my new Style Maker Fabrics.

Black Floral Rayon Challis~. I’m still torn between another Rhapsody or a Caprice Skirt. This fabric looks really nice with my natural linen pants, so I’m leaning towards the Rhapsody. It will be great to wear in the fall as well. This may have sold out, but it is available in a rust color way that is so pretty too!!

Floral Outline Sweatshirt Fleece~. The print on this fabric was so pretty, I just bought it with no plans. I’m thinking maybe a Constellation Pullover. The inside is so soft. It comes in pink and aqua.

Stripe Cotton Pointelle~. This fabric also comes in 2 color ways. I thought this fabric just screamed La Bella Donna. This is 100% cotton with no spandex, so I will be sizing down on this. It has a good amount of stretch but the recovery is a bit less than you may be used to. The texture is just so good on this fabric!
