Fall Inspiration With Style Maker Fabrics + Love Notions

I was so honored to be asked to participate in Style Maker Fabrics Fall Inspiration Tour!!! Since I LOVE Style Maker Fabrics AND Love Notions patterns, I thought it would be a perfect time to combine them to create a perfect Fall ensemble.

A Little About Style Maker Fabric

Style Maker Fabrics is one of my go-to fabric shops. I’ve been a loyal customer since 2018. If I had to pick ONE reason I love Style Maker Fabrics it would be the quality! This small family owned business goes above and beyond to make sure ALL the fabrics they sell are top quality.

To me, buying fabric and sewing are two completely separate hobbies. I LOVE fabric, always have always will. I often buy fabric just because it’s pretty and I like it~ with no intended purpose. It often winds up in my stash and eventually will get used. BUT~ my purchases from Style Maker are very different. This is the shop I go to when I’m looking for something for a specific project. Whether it’s a new Oakley Vest and Aria Shirt combination, or a “Faux Dress” and vest, I can always find exactly what I want at Style Maker. You can purchase samples for a small fee, or even ask them for actual photos of two fabrics together if you’re unsure.

My “Faux Dress”

For this collaboration, I decided I wanted to make separates that I could wear together to look like a dress, but then also have separates that I could combine into several different outfits. Of course, I used a few of my favorite Love Notions patterns.

Patterns Used:

  • New Ladies Band Camp Shirt~ long sleeves
  • Caprice Skirt ~ a super simple hack
  • Boyfriend Cardigan~ hacked to be a vest

The Ladies Band Camp Shirt was my first choice for the top of my faux dress. I love the way the collar on this shirt lays. It has an open neck and is not designed to button up to the collar. Made with the rayon poplin I feel it gave it a dressier look than my earlier versions. For more details on this pattern and to see my other Band Camp Shirts you can check out my blog post here. You can see how fabric choice can really make a pattern look so different! Few tips: Since I was using a rayon fabric, I interfaced both collar pieces. I also stay stitched my neckline edges as soon as they were cut out to prevent distortion. I also prefer to construct my entire sleeve BEFORE I attach it to the body of the shirt. I simply find it much easier to work with this way.

My Caprice Skirt is just a simple hack. I wanted a simple skirt with just a ruffle at the bottom. I simply used the View A/B skirt BACK for both the front and back of my skirt. Easy peasy~ and yet another look from just one pattern! To see more version of the Caprice Skirts I made, check out this blog post.

The Boyfriend Cardigan “Vest” is simply a boyfriend cardigan without the shawl collar, (There is a cutting line on the shawl collar piece to reduce it to just a band). The only thing I did was leave off the sleeves! To finish the armscye I simple folded it to the inside and topstitched it. I didn’t want a facing that would potentially stick out. You could also finish the armscye with bias tape or a strip of your fabric. Want to read/see more of my Boyfriend Cardigans? Visit this blog post.

Fabrics Used:

For the Band Camp Shirt and the Caprice Skirt, I selected a stretch rayon poplin. If you have never sewn with rayon poplin~ you must! It’s a tad heavier and has more structure than rayon challis, yet still has great drape. It has the most luxurious feel to it. This fabric is such high quality~ evident just by touching it! Bonus: it isn’t as “shifty” as rayon challis, it is truly a dream to work with.

I selected this Painterly Autumn Floral Stretch Rayon Poplin in Ocean. It is also available in an Orchid color way. You can find this floral rayon poplin HERE.

There are several other rayon poplins available as well. You can find some HERE.

For my Boyfriend Vest, I chose the Wide Subtle Rib Knit in Deep Ocean. This is one of Style Maker Fabrics staple fabrics. This means they stock them year round and with each season (Spring and Fall) they add new colors. Right now there are 10 different colors available. This is knit is also a dream to work with. It has great stretch AND recovery. I just ordered another piece in winter white to make an Arlington Sweater.

You can find the Wide Subtle Rib Knits HERE.
